Exciting News!

1/31/12

Hello, Eagle Parents!

I’m so excited to share our latest good news with you! It involves our school and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, the well-known educational publisher. Liberty Traditional Charter School has been selected to participate in a new Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Language Arts Program for English Language Learners. This means that over the next two years, Liberty students in kindergarten through third grade will receive more than $80,000 in all-new language arts and reading curriculum!

Liberty was selected to participate in the program because of our experienced language arts teachers, our high percentage of English language learners, and the size of our school. Four classes, one each from kindergarten through third grade, will be participating in the language and literacy program for two years. The teachers of these four classes have been gracious enough to take on the additional responsibilities of keeping a monthly journal for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt researchers, and being observed and interviewed by the testing organization during the two-year program. For this, I’d like to offer a BIG THANK YOU to these teachers! At the conclusion of the two-year pilot program, the rest of the school will receive matching curriculum materials FREE OF CHARGE!

We are so excited and grateful to be able to utilize the most up-to-date resources developed to improve the student learning experience!

Just one quick reminder before I sign off: With the end of the 2012 academic year already in sight, re-enrollment is once again upon us. As you may or may not know, students who attend charter schools like Liberty are NOT automatically rolled over from year-to-year, so it is important to fill out a re-enrollment form each year. Liberty has a “first-come, first-served” policy, so if re-enrollment forms have not been completed, your child runs the risk of being placed on a waiting list. Please feel free to call the school office if you have any questions about re-enrollment.

To continued learning,

January Happenings

1/20/12

Happy 2012, Eagle Families! By now, hopefully everyone is settled in after the holiday hustle and bustle and our students are buckling down for a successful New Year!

As a busy working mom, I know that just because the holiday season is past, that doesn’t necessarily mean life slows down for parents! If you’d like to keep on top of Liberty happenings, view school event photos, and get helpful tips for the whole family – even on the go – consider “liking” our Liberty Traditional School Facebook page. Daily posts will keep you up to date on school happenings and help you stay involved in your child’s education.

At Liberty, we always appreciate parental involvement, and are happy to work with you to meet your academic expectations for your child. Second term report cards went home on January 13, giving students and parents the opportunity to discuss progress and set new goals for this term. Feel free to email your child’s teacher or call the front office at (602) 442-8791 to schedule an appointment if you’d like further information or guidance.

To a happy New Year, and a successful school year,

Raena Janes

October is Bullying Awareness Month

10/21/2011

I hope everyone had a wonderful Fall Break. Please remember that next week, October 24 – 28 is Parent/Teacher conferences. In addition, Oct. 26, 27 and 28 will be half days. This is a perfect opportunity to sit down with your child’s teacher and discuss your child’s performance in school so far. It’s also a great time to connect with your child after the meeting, praising successes and offering assistance in areas where he or she may need improvement.

I’d also like to make you aware of the Bullying Awareness Activities going on this month at Liberty. Liberty holds a ZERO TOLERANCE FOR BULLYING policy. This week until the end of the month, we are making sure students are aware of this policy. Our teachers are also encouraging awareness of this serious issue by holding a Bullying Awareness poster contest, from Oct. 19 through Oct. 28. The three winning posters will be turned into a professionally created plastic sign and hung in the school office or cafeteria to help spread the word that bullying is not okay.

To mark the end of Bully Prevention Month in a positive way, we invite Liberty Phoenix students to come to school dressed as their favorite positive hero (i.e. a firefighter) or superhero (i.e. Superman) on October 31st. The school will host a special lunch on that day with some surprise prizes. I hope you’ll take the time to discuss the problem of bullying with your child and to ask him or her what he or she learned this month about bullying prevention.

Finally, we are always looking for parent volunteers to contribute to and participate in our school activities. Now is a great time to let us know if you’re interested in volunteering for an upcoming school event. There will be plenty of fun opportunities to help out before winter break. If you’re interested in volunteering, please contact the school at 602-442-8791. As always, thank you for your continued support.

October Happenings

10/7/11

Fall break is here, which means the first quarter is officially over! I’d like to take a moment to thank all of our students and teachers for their hard work so far, and to thank all of our parents for their support. Also, just a reminder that there will be no school October 10-14, so we will see all of our students back early Monday morning (10/17).

Right after fall break, we’ve got some important and informative events coming up. Here’s what’s new and exciting:

Mark Your Calendar

Parent Technology Night is coming up! A computer lab teacher will show parents how to get homework help for their children and give parents Internet safety tips. The event will take place on October 19 from 6pm-7:30pm. Child care will be provided.

Ask Your Kids About…

Liberty Traditional is partnering with local engineers to teach 5th – 8th grade students about engineering principles on October 19. Afterwards, the students will get a chance to put what they have learned to practice by building a specific project and then testing its durability. This is a good opportunity for students to learn about a possible career path to follow. Ask them what they thought about the opportunity!

Parent/Teacher Conferences

We believe it’s important for parents to stay involved in their child’s education. Required Parent/Teacher conferences will take place the week of October 24-28. To help give all parents and students a chance to meet with their teachers, October 26, 27 and 28 will be half days with dismissal at 12:15pm. The Boys & Girls Clubs will still be open on these days until 6pm.

Parent/Teacher conferences are a great opportunity to find out how your child is progressing so far this school year. It is a good chance to identify a student’s strengths, as well as any possible areas in need of improvement.

As always, if you have any questions about the upcoming events, please feel free to contact the school at 602-442-8791.

I hope everyone has an enjoyable and safe fall break!

Fall is in the Air

9/20/2011

Despite the continuing summer heat here in Phoenix, autumn is actually right around the corner. In fact, this Friday is officially the first day of fall!

For many, fall means football, and that includes our student athletes! Of course, it also means volleyball time, too! We had quite a few sporting events over the last week, including our first and second volleyball game and our first flag football game. Thank you to everyone who came out to show your school support! Great teamwork, Eagles!

I’m sure all of our students are also getting anxious that we are only two weeks away from fall break (October 10-14)! Parents, fall break will mark the halfway point in the semester, with the end of the first quarter falling on Friday, October 7. Please keep in mind that you don’t have to wait until progress reports are sent out again to see how your children are doing. You can contact their teachers anytime by email, phone (Phoenix Campus (602) 442-8791; Douglas Campus (520) 364-6311), or in person before or after class.

You can also get a glimpse into classroom and school activities via our Facebook page. This month there are pictures of our students participating in a water conservation project, building straw models in science and even enjoying a birthday cake. Facebook photos and the weekly Eagle Echo (available in print and online) can be great conversation starters for discussing school activities with your kids any time of year.

For more ways to stay involved with your child’s education throughout the school year, please visit our online Parental Involvement Page or give us a call. We’re always happy to work with you and work around your schedule when we can.

Have a terrific first day of fall!

Raena Janes
